In addition to his own label, fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld was a major creative force behind such well-known brands as Tommy Hilfiger, Chanel and Fendi. In December 2006, Lagerfeld announced the launch of a new collection for men and women dubbed K Karl Lagerfeld, which included fitted T-shirts and a wide range of jeans. He took work as a creative director with another fashion house before finally, in 1961, striking out on his own. In his over 50 years as creative director of Fendi, and over 30 as the same for Chanel, he's dreamed up some truly iconic looks. In 1967 he was hired as consultant director by upscale Italian design house Fendi to modernize the company’s fur line. Among other innovations, he introduced the use of skins such as mole, rabbit, and squirrel—pelts never before used in high-fashion designs. The designer apologized, explaining that he had taken the design from a book about the Taj Mahal, thinking the words came from a love poem.
